Surrogacy is a process where a surrogate mother, also called a gestational carrier, carries and delivers one or more babies for intended parents who can’t do so on their own for reasons that include:

• Heterosexual couples who have struggled with infertility
• Intended mothers who are unable to carry a child
• Intended parents who have a genetic concern or health condition they don't want to pass onto their child
• Same-sex intended parents who want to have a genetic link to their baby

The surrogate has no genetic connection to the babies she carries. She becomes pregnant when embryos created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) are transferred into her at a fertility clinic.

The surrogacy process requires medical and legal professionals to guide the intended parents. Having social and emotional support throughout the journey is also essential.
