Secondary Infertility: Katie’s Surrogacy Journey

In recognition of National Infertility Awareness Week, we’re posting a series of blogs to shine a light on the causes of infertility and the men and women it affects.

Secondary Infertility refers to a couple’s inability to conceive a baby, even though they’ve had at least one child in the past. Discovering the inability to become pregnant after you’ve already had a child can be just as devastating as learning about infertility when you are first trying to start your family. Circle Parent Katie, does a beautiful job of sharing her story of secondary infertility with The Surrogacy Club, and how surrogacy helped her complete her family.

How did you start looking into surrogacy?
We came to surrogacy through tragedy, as I’m sure many intended parents (IPs) do. In the summer of 2016, we lost a baby girl at 17 weeks gestation. She was conceived through our second round of IVF, so we had become familiar with the process of in vitro, but we had always thought I would be able to carry a second child (I carried our first daughter, who was born in January 2013). A few weeks after the D&E procedure, I was back in the hospital with a major infection due to retained products of conception. It was at this time that they also found a major AVM (arteriovenous malformation) in my uterus that was caused by surgical trauma during the D&E.

So we had not only suffered the devastating loss of our baby girl, but now we were going through the loss of my ability to carry any future children. It was shocking and depressing. Because I’d had other major health issues, and my husband had stood by my side through 9 major abdominal surgeries and 30 hospitalizations, the medical implications were not nearly as devastating as this idea that we may not be able to create the family that we had always envisioned. But we didn’t give up hope. With a fairly empty piggy bank, we turned to surrogacy.

Can you walk us through your surrogacy journey?
After poring over research, we found Circle Surrogacy in Boston. They have been just incredible. Within 3 months of signing with them, we were matched with the most amazing surrogate, whom we have become very close with, and the bond we share with her and her entire family is something our family truly cherishes….
