Dozens in Stockholm attend informational seminar about "Surrogacy in the USA for Swedish Couples and Singles"

May 10, 2008

Circle Surrogacy co-hosted in Stockholm a seminar about "Surrogacy in the USA for Swedish Couples and Singles (på svenska: Surrogatföräldraskap i USA för svenska par och singlar)." The seminar was an opportunity for Swedish gay and straight prospective parents to hear expert advice about this important parenting option and personal stories from Circle's former Swedish clients and one of the surrogates that helped them. Surrogacy is prohibited in Sweden, but it is legal for Swedish citizens to have children through surrogacy abroad and bring them back after the birth.

Speaking at the seminar, John Weltman explained that the United States is the preferable country for surrogacy among Swedish and other international parents due to legal, societal and medical conditions. Almost every state permits compensated surrogacy and no appeals court in any state has ever given custody to a gestational carrier. According to Weltman, having children in the States can be relatively easy for international couples. It is only necessary to come to the United States three to four times, including the 20-week ultrasound and birth. "Departures from the United States are easy as well," says Weltman. "Most international couples return to their countries within 2 weeks of the birth of their children, with their names on the birth certificate and US Passports, if they choose to apply for them."

Circle's success with international clients may be attributed to the special attention that is given to addressing every country's needs and legal circumstances. Circle has studied the laws in Sweden and has a relationship with organizations and political leaders who advocate for legalizing surrogacy there, including MP Martin Andreasson who spoke at the seminar. John also reported that Circle Surrogacy has partnered with local organizations and lawyers to provide a complete solution for Swedish clients before and after the birth." Circle's staff regularly meets with prospective clients for intake consultations in their own countries and cities, although many still conduct them over the phone or video conferencing. Circle's staff leads all parents through the logistical, legal and administrative processes involved from day one until they gain full custody of their newborns and bring them home."

After an introduction of the panel, MP Martin Andreasson spoke about the Swedish laws prohibiting domestic surrogacy. The second speaker is John Weltman, president and founder of Circle Surrogacy. John provided a comprehensive overview of the benefits of surrogacy in the USA for Swedish heterosexual and gay couples and singles, some legal considerations for returning the newborns to Sweden, and the practical steps involved in doing surrogacy in the USA. John also discussed the topics of egg donor and surrogate screening, process coordination, matching criteria, costs, medical and legal considerations.

Also speaking at the seminar was Peter, a Swedish gay parent who along with his partner had twins through surrogacy in the USA. In this clip Peter describes the couple's experience, including why they chose surrogacy in the USA, and why in particular they chose Circle. Peter also speaks in length about what both heterosexual and gay Swedes need to do in order to bring back their newborns to Sweden, and gain full citizenship status for them. (complemented by some remarks on the subject by John Weltman).
