John Weltman and Circle Surrogacy veterans speak

at "Reproductive Choices For Gay Men" Seminar

Circle Surrogacy’s president, John Weltman, along with a CS parent and a two times CS surrogate, joined with the New York gay community for a panel discussion on “Gay Men and Reproductive Choice” on September 10th.  Moderated by Ms. Boggis, director of Center Kids, the family program of the LGBT Community Center, the program offered the latest news about surrogacy, gestational carriers, egg donation, legal risks for gay parents, cost of treatment, and emotional aspects of parenting for gay men who want to have a baby.

Advances in both family law and fertility treatment are making it possible for more gay couples than ever before to have a baby. As a result, there has been a recent boom in gay men becoming dads. "While I have been helping gay couples and singles become parents for over a decade, Circle Surrogacy has seen a drastic increase in surrogacy inquiries from gay men around five years ago, and we have experienced over 150 percent annual growth since" said John Weltman.  He added: "This "gayby" boom was also made possible due to the increasing availability of gestational carriers for gay men. While I had a challenging time finding women to carry children for gay men a decade ago, today many prospective surrogate mothers prefer to work with gay families due to their reputation as especially grateful clients."

In addition to the experts, the panel included two Circle Surrogacy veterans: Ron Poole-Dayan, a gay father of twins, and Bonnie Davis, a mother of three and also a three time surrogate, presently six months pregnant with twin boys for a gay man in the program.  "What has made surrogacy increasingly desirable for gay men is that it offers them the opportunity for control through choice - especially in light of increasing legal and societal hurdles for adoption in many places,” said Ron.

“More than ever, gay parenting is directly linked to reproductive choice” which has long been considered as primarily a straight woman’s issue. From treatment options to legal considerations, a gay man’s ability to be a father is a freedom that must be understood and protected,” said Terry Boggis.
